The Holidays are fast approaching and while most people are thinking about dinner with family and friends and taking some time to relax, many online marketers are working hard to make money during one of the best times of the year for online sales.
According to the National Retail Federation, holiday retail sales will increase 4.1% to $586.1 billion dollars this Holiday shopping season (November and December), which is better than average. The picture is even brighter for online sales which should increase 12% to $96 billion dollars over last year according to shop.org. Based on the growth of mobile commerce, tablet computing, shopping apps and the trends of savvy consumers price shopping and ?showrooming? in retail stores, there are huge opportunities for marketers to cash in on the holiday sales boom. Sales are starting earlier than in the past and running longer. Last year, Amazon started Black Friday sales 24 days before Black Friday, who knows what this year will bring.
The top projected sales items for 2012 will be clothing and gift cards according to a recent study released by PriceGrabber. Downloadable products like ebooks and itunes are also expected to increase. While consumer electronics are not projected to increase, the numbers of smartphones and tablets sold will still be substantial, so apps, downloads and accessories will also be purchased along with those items or right after they are gifted. The study also showed that the majority (75%) of respondents said they would shop online for Holiday purchases, which is good news for marketers. Additional gift items are listed below.
For online marketers, opportunities are everywhere and the sooner you plan and implement the better. Consumers will buy somewhere, you might as well help them out and get a piece of the giant pie.
